What books have you read that are unforgettable?

Bookish Question #294 | What books have you read that are unforgettable?

One of the downsides of being an avid reader is there are So. Many Books. And it’s impossible to remember all the details. This means I only remember the very best … or the very worst.

(But I’m not going to mention them.)

There is also this little issue called age which means I’m more likely to remember a book I read years or decades ago than a book I read last week or last month?

(Or is that just me?)

Having said that, there are a lot of books I do remember for different reasons (mostly good).

Here are a few that have stuck with me over the years:

Danger in the Shadows by Dee Henderson, the prequel to her well-known O’Malley romantic suspense series. I read and enjoyed the whole series, but the prequel and first two books (The Negotiator and The Guardian) were by far my favourites.

Christy by Catherine Marshall, based on the her mother’s story. Christy was is one of the first Christian fiction novels and was later turned into a television series. Now, the annual Christy Awards recognise the best in Christian fiction.

Frasier Island by Susan Page Davis, a military romantic suspense with a very low-key romance, a book I’ve read and re-read because I loved the premise and the characters. I recently re-read and enjoyed as much as I remembered.

Confessions of a Teenage Hermaphrodite by Lianne Simon, a coming-of-age Christian novel set in the 1970s which raised my awareness and understanding of some of the complex issues around gender and God.

And for something more recent, When the Day Comes by Gabrielle Meyer, a unique twist on Christian historical romance (followed by the even-better sequel, In This Moment).

That’s five books I’ve read, re-read, remembered, and enjoyed.

What about you? What books have you read that are unforgettable?

First Line Friday

First Line Friday | Week 147 | The Island Bride by Susan Page Davis

It’s First Line Friday! That means it’s time to pick up the nearest book and quote the first line. Today I’m sharing from The Island Bride by Susan Page Davis. Here’s the first line of Chapter One:

The back door to the kitchen burst open. Molly Orland nearly dropped the wooden spoon she held.

What’s the book nearest you, and what’s the first line?

About The Island Bride

In the summer of 1860, Prince Edward Island is astir as its citizens eagerly anticipate their first visit from a member of the British royal family. Molly Orland is too poor to be invited to the ball honoring the young Prince of Wales, but she and several other local young women are pleased when they are hired as extra staff in the house where he will stay. There she meets Peter Stark, understeward for the royal party.

Peter is attracted to the beauty of the island—and to Molly, whom he’s determined to shield from the antics of the playboy prince. When they discover a long-buried secret that could bring shame to Peter’s royal employer, will he remain a loyal servant—or help Molly and her family get the justice they deserve?

Sweet, inspirational romance set against the historic visit of Queen Victoria’s son to the island.

(Note: The Island Bride was originally published as Love Finds You in Prince Edward Island, Canada, and that’s actually the version I’m reading as it’s at the top of my to-read mountain. Also, The Island Bride is a bit of a misnomer as a title).

Quote from Fort Point: Lending moral support to a depressed genius was exhausting. He had a pessimistic answer to everything.

Book Review | Fort Point (Maine Justice #2) by Susan Page Davis

Fort Point is the second book in the Maine Justice series.

I described Priority Unit, the first book in the series, as an almost-perfect blend of Christian fiction, romance, and suspense. Fort Point has a different feel.

We’ve already seen Detective Harvey Larson and Jennifer Wainthrop fall in love and become Christians in Priority Unit. Fort Point (and, I assume, the later books in the series) are more suspense. The romance and the faith aspects are still there, but they definitely take second place to the suspense plot.

And the suspense is excellent.

Fort Point is a police procedural mystery that begins with the discovery of the body of Maine’s most famous novelist. (Personally, I’ve read enough novels about people who write novels. Perhaps Davis has as well, given her novelist is the victim.)

Detective Larson is part of Maine’s Priority Unit, a special force, so is tasked with investigating the murder. But it’s not easy. The victim wasn’t just a novelist. He was also an investigative journalist, and Larson wonders if one of his investigations may have attracted attention from the wrong people. Soon a second body is discovered, and evidence that suggests corruption in high places …

I didn’t think the writing was as strong in Fort Point (although that could just be that it’s been about a year since I read Priority Unit, and I was so impressed by the three strands of the plot that I didn’t pay much attention to the writing). It wasn’t that the writing is poor. It’s more that it felt a little unpolished in comparison with Davis’s other books.

Overall, Fort Point is a solid suspense novel.

But does have a different flavour than Priority Unit and Susan Page Davis’s earlier romantic suspense novels. If you’re looking for a lightweight romantic suspense novel, Fort Point isn’t what you’re looking for. But if you’re looking for a well-plotted police procedural suspense with plenty of twists and strong characters, Fort Point might be just what you are looking for.

#ThrowbackThursday | The Priority Unit by Susan Page Davis

It’s Throwback Thursday, and today I’m sharing my review of The Priority Unit by Susan Page Davis. This review first appeared at the now-defunct Suspense Sisters Reviews, and I’m delighted to be able to share it again. I love Susan Page Davis’s romantic suspense novels. She was one of the first authors I read in the genre, and is one of the big reasons I’m such a fan.

My Review

Jennifer Wainthrop meets Detective Harvey Larson when he visits her workplace to investigate the disappearance of one of her colleagues, and he asks her out.

I’m not always a fan of romances where there is a big age gap between the hero and heroine.  I’ve always found Jane Austen’s Mr Knightley a little creepy, and even as a child I could see the potential for problems in the marriage between Prince Charles and Lady Diana. I think The Priority Unit dealt with the sixteen-year age gap well. This was helped by the fact Harvey Larson was a man of principle and honour, and I could see what Jennifer saw in him.

Equally, while Jennifer was young, she had a maturity and professionalism that belied her age. And she was an outstanding computer programmer (in a world full of too-stupid-to-live heroines, I’m always impressed by a heroine (or hero) with intelligence, competence, and professionalism.

The suspense thread was well balanced against the romance.

The novel was perhaps more focused on the relationship rather than the suspense. The suspense is there, but it’s somewhat low key—without a body it’s hard to know whether a crime has been committed, let alone solve it. Although the missing computer programmer isn’t Harvey’s only problem. Someone seems to have a target on his back…

What impressed me the most was the overt Christian aspect of the novel.

Neither Harvey nor Jennifer were Christians at the beginning, yet they both commit to making an honest search to see if God is real—a search they commence together. This brings them closer together at the same time as having the potential to drive them apart—what if only one chooses to believe?

Susan Page Davis is the author of Frasier Island, one of my all-time favourite romantic suspense novels. Okay, so there are elements of both novels which stretch the bounds of credibility if you think about them too much, but the characters and story are so strong it doesn’t matter.

Overall, The Priority Unit was a Christian Romantic Suspense novel which actually managed to give all three aspects equal weight—it was overtly Christian, with a building romance, and an ongoing suspense thread. An excellent novel which is especially praiseworthy for the overt Christian aspect. Even better, it’s the first in a series!

Recommended.

About The Priority Unit

A missing man.

A mysterious computer program –

Even the people constructing it don’t know what it will do.

On the worst night of Harvey Larson’s life, his partner is killed and his wife, Carrie, walks out on him. Ten years later, the Portland, Maine police detective has learned to cope with his grief and depression. When he and the Priority Unit investigate the disappearance of software designer Nick Dunham, he meets a young woman who will change his life. Jennifer Wainthrop was the last person to admit seeing Dunham alive.

Harvey and his partner, Eddie Thibodeau, stay a step ahead of a bomber and put together the clues that tell the truth: Dunham’s kidnapping and the bombings are one case, and Jennifer is caught in the middle. News that Carrie has committed suicide may plunge Harvey back into despair. Harvey turns to God for help untangling his complicated life. He finds strength in his faith as he attempts to save Jennifer from the same grim fate that claimed Nick. But Jennifer must depend on her own wits and God alone when the killer gets too close.
