Why do married people always think everyone else should be married too?

Book Review | Uncharted Mercy (Uncharted #14) by Keely Brooke Keith

Uncharted Mercy is the latest book in Keely Brooke Keith’s Uncharted series. The series is a unique mix of historical and futuristic romance as the series is set in the future, after Earth has experienced a nuclear war and chaos reigns … everywhere except the Land, which has been stuck in the 1860s because of the strange atmospheric disturbance surrounding the Land.

Uncharted Mercy is the story of Bette Owens, a widow with two young children who makes her living as a hatmaker. When her interfering in-laws decideher son should live with themwhile Bette marries a man she has never met, Bette vents her frustrations to herneighbour, Noah Vestal. Noah proposes a novel solution—marriage.

It’s pretty obvious that Noah has feelings for Bette, but he then worries that he may have coerced her into marriage. I really liked Noah and his attitude—it showed he was a man of honour. Unfortunately, Noah has a secret (that series readers have known for the last two books, but which Bette and the other villagers don’t know). That secret is about to put Noah’s home and livelihood at risk.

This is an excellent romance, a marriage of convenience that turns into a real relationship. I loved the way Bette and Noah’s relationship developed, and the healthy way they integrated Bette’s children into their relationship. (Or is that the healthy way Bette integrated Noah into her family?)

I really liked the ending. Without giving anything away, it showed how a good Christian marriage is a partnership of equals, even in a patriarchial setting.

All the stories are standalone titles, so you don’t need to read the whole series for this book to make sense. However, you’ll probably want to read at least The Land Uncharted (#1 inthe series) and Uncharted Grace (#12, Caroline’s story) to best appreciate Uncharted Mercy.

I’ve enjoyed all the Land Uncharted series. I particularly enjoyed Uncharted Mercy because of the marriage of convenience trope, because we got to see more of Connor in this story, and because of the strong Christian characters of both Bette and Noah.

Book Review | Uncharted Peace (Uncharted #13) by Keely Brooke Keith

I didn’t enjoy Uncharted Peace as much as I’ve enjoyed previous novels in the Land Uncharted series. I think there are two reasons for that. One was because the romance was largely completed via letters before the story started. The second was because the “secret” hinted at in the book description is something the dedicated series reader already knows, because it was revealed in the previous book in the series, Uncharted Grace.

Rather than being a story of Lena and Phillip’s romance, it was a story about how an obscure law almost prevented their marriage … a plot device that felt a little contrived, given it hasn’t been mentioned in the twelve previous romances in this series. We read romance to watch the couple fall in love. Sure, we know there are going to be a few problems along the way, but Uncharted Peace seemed to be mostly problems with not enough of the falling-in-love phase of romance.

I’m also not a big fan of marriages where there is a big age gap between the hero and heroine. It wasn’t immediately obvious, but Philip Roberts is much older, and he does sometimes seem almost patronising in his attitude towards Lena. I didn’t find that attractive, which made it harder to want their relationship to move forward.

The best part about Uncharted Hope is the Christian element.

Despite being older and a preacher, Philip Roberts still had a few things to learn about God and life, and it was good to see him learning those lessons.

Overall, Uncharted Peace wasn’t my favourite in the series, but I’m still looking forward to the next book.

Book Review | Uncharted Grace (Uncharted #12) by Keely Brooke Keith

Caroline and her sister, Lena, have accompanied their brother, Noah, to the village of Good Springs where Noah has just inherited a house and orchard from a childless adoptive uncle. Caroline is an extrovert who has never had much opportunity to socialise, so is looking forward to getting to know the people of Good Springs … and the handsome doctor who has moved into the house across the road.

Jedidiah has just arrived in Good Springs as the new town doctor, to take some of the load from Dr Lydia Colburn now her family is growing. He’s looking forward to becoming officially titled as doctor so he can’t be forced to return to his home village and his dishonest family. He’s interested in the lady across the road, but some of the things she says suggests she’s hiding a secret … and he has no interest in anyone who is anything less than honest.

But Jedidiah is hiding his own secrets … like the truth about his family.

I once read that any character with a secret is a good start to any novel, and that certainly proves true with Uncharted Grace. I especially enjoy secrets in fiction when the reader knows the secret and we’re waiting to see what will happen when the secrets are revealed (because they have to be revealed, right?).

I have read and enjoyed every story in the Uncharted series.

I love the twist on the traditional romance that comes from having characters with very different upbringings–characters who have to come to terms with and accept their place because there is no other option.

The first few books in the series were set in the town of Good Springs and painted a picture of an idyllic location where everyone was a Christian and lived a Christian life. They weren’t perfect and they had troubles, but life was good.

The last few books have ventured into other settlements in the Land, especially the Inn. Uncharted Grace brings us back to the familiar location of Good Springs, and the familiar characters such as Connor and the Colburns.

I loved that.

But neither Caroline nor Jedidiah are from Good Springs. Caroline and her siblings were adopted and grew up in Northcrest after their parents died. Jedidiah is from Stonehill, and we find out enough about both locations to realise that not everywhere in the Land is as idyllic as Good Springs … and much of that is down to the leadership. That’s a thought worth pondering.

Uncharted Grace ticks all the boxes. It’s an excellent slow-burn romance between an older couple (they’re both twenty-nine, which is positively ancient in a culture where people tend to marry almost a decade younger). It’s a quick, easy, and relaxing read, perfect for after a hard week at work.

While Uncharted Grace is a standalone story, you’ll probably enjoy it more if you’ve read at least one other book in the series. I’d recommend starting with The Land Uncharted, which introduces Connor and the Colburns.

Recommended for fans of Amish or prairie romance who are looking for a new twist on a familiar story.

We’re halfway though 2023 already … and it’s summer for those of you in the northern hemisphere, and winter Down Under. Either time is great for a good book!

I’ve already read three of this month’s new releases, and all are excellent: Plagues and Papyrus by Christine Dillon looks at a familiar story from a new perspective, Uncharted Grace by Keely Brooke Keith is the next in her unique spin on futuristic romance, and Dedicated to the One I Love by Beth K Vogt is a contemporary romance with a fun twist.

Book Review | Uncharted Courage (Land Uncharted #10) by Keely Brooke Keith

Bailey Colburn is feeling unsettled, so takes a trip to the village of Good Springs to visit old friends and get advice from the village elder, John Colburn. She visits over spring equinox, the one time of year when a change in atmospheric conditions allows newcomers to enter the Land. And someone does … actually, two people.

Revel is enjoying his role as island courier now he’s had his father’s blessing to take the role and not take over the family inn. Now, if he can only get Bailey to see how he feels about her. But first he has to share the information the newcomer brought.

Both are fiercely independent and love their freedom, Bailey especially. Both have to learn that working alone doesn’t always yeild the best result. Sometimes, it’s better to work together …

Uncharted Courage is an enjoyable romance, and a relatively quick read.

It’s good to see Bailey again—she’s been one of my favourite characters throughout the series. I also enjoyed the underlying spiritual thread, and the way the Christian elements underpin the entire plot without being preachy.

Uncharted Courage is the tenth book in the Uncharted series, about a small community living on a hidden island while World War III rages in the outside world. Keith does an excellent job of reminding readers of the important points from the previous novels by weaving them into the present story in a way that feels natural.

While you could read Uncharted Courage as a standalone novel, it’s probably best to read through the series in order. Having said that, my favourite stories in the series are the stories like Uncharted Courage, where there is a crossover between the Land and the outside world.

Recommended for fans of historical Christian romance or speculative romance with a twist.

Book Review | Uncharted Freedom by Keely Brooke Keith

Naomi McIntosh is living and working in Pleasant Valley under an assumed name, having escaped her abusive father and an unwanted engagement. But when she hears a rumour that her fiancé is offering a reward for finding her, she knows it’s time to move on again.

She travels to Falls Creek Inn and takes a job as housekeeper under the name Charity Ashton. It would be the perfect job if it wasn’t for James Roberts, son of the Inn’s owner, and the shepherd boy she fell in love with in her home of Southpoint. James knows who she is, but can he keep her secret? And is there any chance of them forming an attachment after how Naomi once rejected him?

Uncharted Freedom is a classic case of doing the wrong thing for the right reason.

Naomi lies about her name and background, but not because she’s dishonest. She lies because she’s afraid of her abusive father and equally afraid of the older man he’s promised her to. For better or worse, running away and lying was the only solution she could see.

James has his own issues. He’s the second son, so won’t inherit the Inn. But Revel, his older brother, is a wanderer with no intention or desire to claim his inheritance, even though their father is aged and unwell. James thinks he wants the inn, but he also loves his role as a shepherd, loves his sheep, and loves Naomi, but doesn’t understand why she’s lying.

As such, this is a story about truth and honesty, and working out how to do the right thing rather than what seems to be the easy thing.

Uncharted Freedom is the latest in Keely Brooke Keith’s ongoing Uncharted series. As part of a series, there are some ongoing threads that will make more sense to those who have read at least some of the previous novels, because there are several recurring characters and an overarching story arc. In fact, the end of Uncharted Freedom promises more from this arc in the next book in the series.

And that was one thing I particularly liked about Uncharted Freedom – the way it connected to the rest of the series. While each novel is a standalone romance, the background is what makes the novels different from other Christian romances set in a similar era, and is what makes the Uncharted series a must-read for me.

Recommended for fans of Christian historical romance and speculative fiction.
