It’s First Line Friday! That means it’s time to pick up the nearest book and quote the first line. Today I’m sharing from Underestimating Miss Cecilia by Carolyn Miller—my favourite Christian Regency Romance author. Here’s the first line:
Unrequited love is one of my favourite romance tropes, so I’m looking forward to reading this.
What’s the book nearest you, and what’s the first line?
About Underestimating Miss Cecilia
Shy, sweet Cecilia Hatherleigh has always been in love with Edward Amherst, the boy next door. Yet he’s never seen her as anything but the quiet girl in the background as he flirts with the other vivacious women of the ton.
When a near tragedy brings Edward’s attention to his family duties, this prodigal son decides he needs to settle down with a proper wife. Cecilia hopes to convince him to choose her—but God may want her to forget the wayward nobleman and put her future in His hands alone.
These two try to find their way toward happiness, but prejudice, political riots, and the changing face of England’s societal structures begin to block them at every turn. Can their struggles turn to triumph—or will their paths permanently diverge?

Happy Friday! My first line is from “Kate’s Song” by Jennifer Beckstrand:
“Is he dead? Please tell me he’s not dead!”
Is he or isn’t he? That’s a great question to open with, and definitely one that would keep me reading.
Have a great weekend!
That IS a great first line! It reminds me of having unrequited crushes in high school. 🙂
I’m currently reading Andrew by Jennifer Beckstrand and LOVING IT! I loved the first line of chapter three so I’ll share that one. ” Alfie Benaiah Petersheim, get that cat off my table!”
I prefer to forget that aspect of high school …
Happy reading!
That is a great first line! I’m going to need to find a copy to enjoy! 🙂
It releases this week. Happy reading!
There is so much truth to that line!! Happy Friday!
Sadly true. Happy reading!
I’m seeing this book quite a bit today! I an woefully behind on Regency reading.
I am currently reading an ARC of The Bridge Between by Lindsey Brackett. Here’s the first line — She still had trouble sleeping.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Still? Interesting! I haven’t heard of that book – thanks for sharing 🙂
Happy reading!
Happy Friday!
On my blog I’m sharing the first line from Underestimating Miss Cecelia by Carolyn Miller: http://christianfictiongirl.blog/2019/07/18/first-line-friday-94/.
Today, I’m currently reading The Spice King by Elizabeth Camden. It’s an excellent story that I highly recommend! I’m just starting chapter 34, so I’ll share from there.
“Gray rarely took the time to read The Washington Post first thing in the morning.”
Hope you have an excellent weekend!!! 😀❤📚
Miss Cecilia seems to be a popular choice this week 🙂
Looking forward to reading Cecy’s story! Here’s the first line from my current read, Just One Kiss by Courtney Walsh: “Carly Collins hated running late.”
I’ve got this on pre-order and I’m looking forward to reading it 🙂
Carolyn Miller is an author I need to try! Since I’m sharing from chapter 1 of Yours Truly, Thomas by Rachel Fordham on my blog today, here is the first line from the prologue:
“After letting an involuntary squeal escape, Penny pulled the yellowed papers closer and pressed her lips to them.”
Happy Friday and happy reading!
Yours Truly, Thomas is on my to-read pile (so is Rachel Fordham’s first book). Too many books, too little time. Happy reading!
Today on my blog I shared the first line from Storm Rising by Ronie Kendig but I’m currently reading Fragments of Fear by Carrie Stuart Parks so I’ll share the first line from my current chapter (8) here: “Marley was sitting by the door in the living room when Travis returned.” Hope you have a great weekend with plenty of reading time! 🙂
It’s winter here in New Zealand, which is great for sitting by the fire and reading. Thanks for stopping by 🙂
I love Carolyn’s books! I’m sharing on my blog the first line from At First Spark by Liwen Y. Ho.
Darren Spark never imagined that one person could make him feel so happy and sad all at the same time.

I’ve seen this book quite a bit around #FLF. Hope you enjoy, happy reading!
It seems we all had the same bright idea. It releases this week, and I’m looking forward to reading it.
