It’s First Line Friday! That means it’s time to pick up the nearest book and quote the first line. Today I’m sharing from The Secret to Hummingbird Cake by Celeste Fletcher McHale. It got a few critical reviews for not being “Christian” enough … which got me wondering why! Here’s the first line:
What’s the book nearest you, and what’s the first line?
About The Secret to Hummingbird Cake
“Why won’t you just tell me what’s in that cake?” I’d been trying to get Laine’s recipe for years. We all had.
When all else fails, turn to the divine taste of hummingbird cake.
In the South you always say “yes, ma’am” and “no, ma’am.” You know everybody’s business. Football is a lifestyle not a pastime. Food—especially dessert— is almost a religious experience. And you protect your friends as fiercely as you protect your family— even if the threat is something you cannot see.
In this spot-on Southern novel brimming with wit and authenticity, you’ll laugh alongside lifelong friends, navigate the sometimes rocky path of marriage, and roll through the outrageous curveballs that life sometimes throws . . . from devastating pain to absolute joy. And if you’re lucky, you just may discover the secret to hummingbird cake along the way.

First line of “Distant Echos” by Colleen Coble
“The turquoise water surrounded Kaia Oana in a warm, wet blanket of delight.”
I am one of those who put a caveat on my review. Some language and adult situations that were viewed as ok in the “right” circumstances made me give it less than 5 stars. I did like it though.
Have a great weekend!
Happy Friday! My first line is from “The Pink Bonnet” by Liz Tolsma:
“Momma, Momma, watch me.”
I have the book you quoted from byt alas , I have not read it yet!
My first line is from No Ocean Too Wide by Carrie Turansky. It came out a few days ago!
London 1909
Katie McAlister’s heart pounded a frantic beat as she gripped the rickety railing and rushed down the back stairs.
Great historical book!
Happy Friday!
Today on my blog I shared the first 2 lines from Until the Mountains Fall by Connilyn Cossette but it’s also my current read so I’ll share the first line from chapter 7 where I am now: “I found my father on the roof, on his knees.” It’s amazing so far! Hope you have a wonderful weekend with plenty of quality reading time 🙂
Hi Iola, I haven’t heard of this book. It sounds interesting and I do like Hummingbird cake, lol.
Today I’m sharing on my blog the first line from The Cowboy’s Convenient Marriage by Valerie Comer.
Spencer Haviland had prided himself on planning his life to the tiniest detail.
This sounds like a lovely read! Thank you for sharing.
This book sounds interesting. I don’t mind reading a non-Christian book if it’s clean, but I don’t like a Christian book that doesn’t live up to the category it’s placed in. If it’s Christian, it should encourage the reader to long for Godly morals in their own life without compromise. Frankly, it should exemplify a Godly life. I’ve not read this book, so I wonder if you agree with those reviewers who complained. I’m sorry I’m so late this week in participating. Life has just been a bit crazy, but good. Hope you are enjoying a wonderful weekend!
I’ve never read that book, but would like to! Today I’m sharing the first lines from Living Lies by Natalie Walters: “Just let go. The breeze lifted Lane Kent’s auburn hair from the back of her neck.” Happy Reading!
