It’s Friday, which means it’s time to open the book nearest you and share the first line. Today I’m sharing from Jewel of the Stars: Earth’s Remnant by Adam David Collings:
Yes, it’s sci fi. I admit it: I love sci fi. I don’t read a lot, because there isn’t a lot of Christian sci fi out there. But I’ve watched a lot of sci fi on television over the years: Star Trek, Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Terminator, Heroes … yes, I’m a fan.
Jewel of the Stars isn’t heavy on the Christian element, but the author is a Christian and it’s clearly written from a Christian world view (with the possible exception of the invading aliens. The Bible doesn’t have invading aliens, but they are pretty much compulsory in a good sci fi story).
About the Book
Haylee was more confident designing starships than raising an autistic child. Now she just wants a relaxing holiday with her family. But when Earth falls to an alien armada, she knows life will never be the same again.
Les was just a cruise ship captain. Now, he must rise up and become something greater, if he is to keep his crew and passengers alive.
Braxton never wanted to leave the space navy, but now, taking a cruise is the only way to feel the stars around him. This crisis may be his ticket to regaining the life he thought was gone forever.
Can they overcome their differences and save everyone on the ship?
If they reach unexplored space, they might yet survive, but an unstoppable enemy stands in their way…
Earth’s Remnant is the thrilling pilot to an episodic space opera, Jewel of The Stars, by Adam David Collings. Join the crew as they fight for survival against the wondrous backdrop of the unknown. What else will they find hiding among the stars?

I confess I’m not a big sci fi fan at all. I haven’t even watched Star Wars, much to my husband’s everlasting embarrassment! But I love that first line, and I suspect I could put up with the sci fi elements for a good story. 🙂
I’ve got the first line from Janet Ferguson’s new release, Magnolia Storms, on my blog today, but I’m going to share the first line from my current read: Many Sparrows, by Lori Benton (Oh. My. Word! ❤️ )
“Jeremiah Ring had witnessed death as often as the next man on the Allegheny frontier, but in all his thirty years he had encountered no deaths more dismaying than those confronting him now.”
It feels wrong, somehow, to follow that up with ‘have a good weekend’, but I hope you do! 🙂
Perhaps your husband would enjoy Jewel of the Stars?
Magnolia Storms was wonderful. And I’m hearing so many good things about Many Sparrows. I’ll have to check it out!
Happy Friday! My first line is from A Christmas to Remember by Linda Brooks Davis:
1908 4 days until Christmas
“The line of delicate stitches blurred to a crimson smudge.”
Great first line! Thanks for stopping by. Have a great weekend!
You’re so right. It’s so hard to find a good Christian sci-fi. This looks like something that’d be up my alley. Thanks for sharing!
I’m sharing about “The League and the Lantern” by Brian Wells over at my blog today, but the closest book to me (which is on my Kindle at the moment) is “All of You” by Sarah Monzon.
Present Day, 100 Miles off the Coast of Virginia
Lieutenant Michael “Finch” Carrington pulled up the zipper of his green flight suit and stared at the mass on the opposite rack.
Happy Weekend!
I enjoyed All of You. I’ll check out The League and the Lantern as well. Happy weekend to you as well!
I do enjoy some sci-fi. Star Trek is my personal favorite. I even read a few star trek books. I also enjoyed watching The Star Gate TV series. I’ve watched Star Wars, but not gotten into the books. I can thank my husband for my space explorations. 🙂
I’ve never read any of the Star Trek books, but I did enjoy watching Stargate SG-1 (not the new one, though). If you and your husband like sci-fi, I think you’ll enjoy Jewel of the Stars.
This cover looks exactly like Star Wars, which I love! 🙂 I haven’t read a lot of Sci-fi, except for H.G. Wells in college. But I do enjoy watching certain films, and I can’t wait to see the new Star Wars land that opens in Hollywood Studios next year.
Star Wars land? Sounds great!
I think the author and designer got the cover spot on. It’s exactly right for the genre.
Ha! That first line made me laugh! I’m not a huge sci-fi fan unless the emphasis is on something other than the sci-fi element (like in the Space Trilogy) – but I love the obvious sense of humor that this author seems to have. 🙂
Have a blessed weekend, Iola!
Thanks, Alicia!
Yes, there is some definite humour in the book!
Right now, I’m reading Love Held Captive by Shelley Shepard Gray. It’s the final novel in the Lone Star Hero trilogy. The first line is:
“There was almost nothing there. Almost.”
